Vortrag von Professor Jan Friden, Tetrahandchirurg SPZ, an der TEDEX Zürich.
Dauer 14:45 Minuten
Inhalts-Beschreibung "Loss and recapture of hand control"
The human hand is unique across species and together with our brains a major contributor to our success on earth. It is a versatile tool that is crucial for most of our daily activities. The control of this complex tool is not guaranteed for life. Numerous diseases and accidents may affect hand performance. Jan Fridén takes us on a journey demonstrating one of the most dramatic losses of hand control -- the high spinal cord injuries at the neck level causing complete paralyses of all four extremities. But this is not the end of the story. Life is not over and mobility can be restored using modern surgical techniques to transfer nerves and muscles to reanimate lost functions and get hand control back. Some examples of this fascinating surgery, the brain plasticity to relearn and regain hand functions will be demonstrated. Most importantly, the individuals' perception and course of motor relearning to achieve the new functions will be illustrated. Increased mobility and freedom by integration of the new functions into daily activities is the ultimate treatment success.
Dr. Jan Fridén is a professor and senior consultant of Hand Surgery at Sahlgrenska University Hospital and University of Gothenburg, Sweden. He is in charge of the Swedish National Tetraplegia Hand Surgery Centre and since 2011 Head of the Tetrahand Surgery Service at the Swiss Paraplegic Centre in Nottwil, Switzerland. Professor Fridén has dedicated his entire career to improving the upper limb function in individuals with Tetraplegia (paralysis of all four extremities). Professor Fridén's research has provided primary data on the mechanical properties at micro and macro level of upper extremity muscles.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations).
