Neuropsychology

Neuropsychologie

Neuropsychology is a clinical and scientific specialty that combines aspects of both neurology and psychology and studies the relationships between the brain, cognition, and behavior. As an interdisciplinary field, neuropsychology is concerned with the organisation and mode of function of psychological tasks in the human brain and demonstrates the manner in which cerebral disease processes and pharmacologic substances qualitatively and quantitatively change brain performance.

Clinical neuropsychology studies higher brain functions (for example, perception, memory, speech, attention, or frontal brain functions such as planning of actions and mental flexibility) in relation to disturbances, cerebral diseases, or injuries. The aim of the neuropsychological diagnostic tests and subsequent counseling is to reduce the severity of the cognitive deficit or facilitate adjustment to the life situation and, consequently, to maintain or improve the patient’s quality of life.
