The research field of Swiss Paraplegic Research (SPF) follows a transdisciplinary and inclusive approach.
The fundamental basis for SPF’s research activities is the Swiss Spinal Cord Injury Cohort Study (SwiSCI). SwiSCI serves as a research platform for SPF’s research groups as well as for national and international groups of stakeholders with questions related to clinical and community-oriented research. Within this core project, SPF has been collaborating closely with the four paraplegic centers in Switzerland, Swiss Paraplegic Association (SPV), persons with spinal cord injury from all over Switzerland, research teams at Swiss universities, Swiss centers for neurorehabilitation and a series of European and international research groups since 2010.
Research focus
Work and Integration
Integrating people with disabilities into society and working life is a key concern, both for those affected and from a socio-political perspective.
Neuro-Musculoskeletal Functioning and Mobility
People with spinal cord injuries rely on their upper limbs in everyday life, so their shoulders are often under heavy mechanical strain. This increases the risk of tissue overload and shoulder problems.
Person-centered Healthcare and Health Communication
Communication is of central importance in healthcare. Communication is used to convey health information between healthcare professionals and patients, as well as between professionals themselves.
Ageing, Functioning Epidemiology and Implementation
This branch of research aims to optimize the functioning and social participation of disabled people in all areas of life. One area of focus is the ageing population with spinal cord injuries.
Health Economics and Services
Our research covers economic aspects, as well as the use and quality of health services.
SCI Population Biobanking and Translational Research
We run a biobank of blood and urine samples from people with spinal cord injuries (SCI). We also conduct research into biomedical issues and the biomarkers of common problems associated with SCI.
Learning Health System Spinal Cord Injury
How can health systems be improved? How do they keep pace with innovations in research? And how can they ensure that healthcare meets the highest possible standards?
Functioning Information Reference Lab
This research area focuses on developing and implementing standardized methods for documenting information about the functioning of people with spinal cord injuries and other conditions.
