Extended Reality in Day-to-Day Clinic Operations

How the eye can explore digital worlds
In partnership with Augment IT, the Swiss Paraplegic Centre (SPC) is developing a platform for tetraplegics and others with limited hand function to access the digital world with ease. Users can interact in the ParaVerse platform with their eyes only thanks to extended reality goggles. They can surf the net, watch YouTube videos and chat with their friends and family via messenger app. None of this requires the use of one’s hands or voice, which is particularly helpful for recently injured persons. Caregivers need only to assist with putting on the goggles. This allows persons living with a spinal cord injury to be more independent and enjoy much more privacy.

Smart Learning
Augmented reality has the potential to revolutionise learning in healthcare. Caregivers can practise essential processes and medical procedures in a realistic environment in the SPC. The HoloLens 2 provides immersive training where users can see virtual objects and simulations in their direct line of vision. Essential processes can be practised as often as desired with the goggles, helping enhance employee confidence in their job duties. This gives them more time to concentrate fully on patients in their rooms. All in all, augmented reality will be a «new normal» for healthcare that allows teams to work more safely, further improve patient care, and increase efficiency.
Hand and finger function training
Thanks to the extended reality goggles, patients at the SPC find that training offers greater variety and shows them new practice methods. Hand bike trips in the training room allow them to simulate a ride along the California coast. They can also have fun while improving hand and finger movements with a type of 3D Tetris. Beyond this, there are numerous apps and games that, thanks to gamification, allow patients to train more intensively and efficiently.
