Psychological services

As part of an interdisciplinary treatment team, we support patients and their relatives through the rehabilitation process. In particular, we support them in engaging and coming to terms with underlying medical conditions or the consequences of an accident. One important aspect is to strengthen patients in their autonomy, as well as activating their existing resources and putting new ones in place.

Psychologischer Dienst

The consequences of paralysis are very far-reaching: They affect a person not only on a physical level but also in the social and psychological aspects of his or her life. The individual as a whole is injured, and much of what used to make sense and provided mental stability is suddenly called into question or destroyed. In this respect, questions relating to the following areas are often also relevant – in addition to medical considerations:

  • Independence
  • Planning for the future
  • Relationships (life partner, parents, relatives, and friends)
  • Professional situation
  • Living situation
  • Hobbies and interests
  • Acceptance and body image
  • Sexuality and partners
  • and more

In most cases, engaging with these topics is essential. In addition to fundamental life changes, they contain opportunities for personal growth and can play a leading role in dealing constructively with the spinal cord injury.

D. Stirnimann 2015, Klinische Psychologie bei Querschnittlähmung, p. 272:

“In most cases, the spinal cord injury remains an inescapable fact - only the way it is dealt with can be optimised.”
