Who can see the Hand Surgery department?

The Hand Surgery clinic is open to both able-bodied people and people with a spinal cord injury; in the outpatient and inpatient clinic.

What operations are performed in Hand Surgery at the SPC?

How do I get a clinic appointment?

Register via the doctor treating you/your GP (GP model) or enquire directly by email or phone.

Who covers the costs for the operation? Do I have to pay myself?

Depending on your condition, the health insurance provider or accident insurance provider will be responsible. The Hand Surgery secretary’s office and the SPC patient administration will deal with the administrative matters.

There is a separate process for foreign patients.

How long should I expect to be admitted for?

This depends on the procedure and ranges from outpatient treatment to admission for several weeks of rehabilitation (surgery for tetraplegics).

What will life be like for me immediately after the operation? (Paraplegics and tetraplegics)

Restrictions to ADLs (activities of daily living). During your inpatient treatment, you will be looked after by the hand surgeons, the hand therapy team (occupational therapy and physiotherapy) and the nursing team.

What can I do outside of therapy sessions?

Your own training, in some cases supported by video recordings. MTT (medical training therapy)

Are there accommodation options nearby for relatives?

Hotel Sempachersee Nottwil (on the campus), which is wheelchair-accessible, offers rooms and excellent catering. There are other accommodation options available in Sursee and the surrounding area.

Why is the admission date a day before the operation?

There will be various admission meetings and check-ups with the doctors, hand therapy and nursing staff.

Is treatment complete when I leave?

Continued hand therapy will be recommended if necessary. This may be with our hand therapy team or at an external hand therapy practice.

Doctors will carry out check-ups if necessary. For complex operations for tetraplegics, we schedule check-ups after three, six, twelve and 24 months.

Do people with a spinal cord injury have to have initial contact with our hand surgeons on site?

A telemedicine initial consultation can be arranged for patients with a spinal cord injury who live abroad. This will be coordinated by the Hand Surgery secretary’s office.
