Fact: the SPC is not just a rehabilitation clinic, but also a centre for acute care. We treat paraplegics suffering from a variety of acute medical conditions, as well as non-paraplegics experiencing symptoms such as back/chronic pain or sports injuries, those in need of long-term artificial respiration and others seeking medical care. With the opening of new infrastructures at the SPC, our operating rooms, anaesthesiology facilities, intensive care unit, pain centre and sports medicine department are now equipped with all the latest technology. Certified acute care specialists are available at all hours of the day and night. At the SPC, we understand that for rehabilitation to be successful, excellent acute care must already be firmly in place.

Unfortunately, many paraplegics continue to be treated for acute illnesses or accidents in hospitals that lack expertise in the area of spinal cord injury.

Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation works best when all the aspects of a patient’s health problems or disability are continually taken into consideration. We take advantage of the expertise of rehabilitation specialists from a variety of vocations to come up with an interdisciplinary rehabilitation concept that is based on individual needs. At the SPC, physical and occupational therapists (among others) also play the role of "paraplegia therapists”, and draw upon state-of-the-art robotics and extensive cooperation with other leading institutions to constantly strengthen our position as leaders of the field.

Outpatient care

As much as needed, as little as possible

Not all care must be inpatient care. When appropriate, acute care and rehabilitation are performed on an outpatient basis - either locally at the Nottwil site, in Lausanne and Bellinzona, or at a partner institution. More and more non-paraplegics are taking advantage of our extensive know-how in the treatment of spinal cord injuries. A number of customised offers may also be of interest to you.
