Swiss Paraplegic Research (SPF) is funded by three main sources.

Firstly, Swiss Paraplegic Foundation guarantees the core financing through an annual operational contribution.

The second financial pillar of SPF is based on a federal grant according to Art.15 FIFG (Federal Law on the promotion of research and innovation) and a grant from the Canton of Lucerne in line with the federal grant. The federal and cantonal grants that SPF has received since 2008 are part of the grant for extra-university research establishments of national importance. This contribution is based on four-yearly grant assessments which are submitted to the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SBFI), assessed by the Swiss Science Council (SWR) and recommended by the Confederation and Canton. The current recognition and grant has been awarded for the period 2017 – 2020.

The third pillar of financing consists of competitively acquired research grants for specific research projects. Important funding agencies are the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and the European Commission (EC) as well as the Suva with respect to questions on applied health care provision. SPF receives further contributions as a result of its collaboration with the business partners and other agencies from the public sector.
