  • A balanced, healthy diet is essential for our physical and mental health, athletic performance and well-being. Eating a balanced diet and getting plenty of exercise do wonders for our health and well-being.
    The initial consultation is designed to get an idea of the current eating habits of patients, as well as to determine their specific dietary needs. Next, we help patients set goals, modify their diets and devise action plans that match their needs, interests and abilities.

  • More and more performance-enhancing supplements are making their way onto the market. Unless you are a professional, it is difficult to know which supplements are effective at improving health and enhancing performance in each specific scenario. Sports Medicine Nottwil will be happy to provide you with an overview of these supplements, and offer you the best possible advice for your own particular case. It makes no difference whether your goal is to improve your health, or to discover a supplement that can boost your performance while training or competing.

  • Gas, diarrhoea and gastrointestinal illnesses can be caused by a number of different things. One possible cause is an intolerance to lactose (dairy products), fructose or sugar alcohol (sorbitol). This simple test can confirm or rule out such an intolerance, and help the patient or athlete to recover. Please call the secretariat directly if you have questions on the test, or would like to address your gastrointestinal problems.

  • By measuring a patient’s metabolic rate, it is possible to determine the number of calories the body needs each day to maintain its physiological functions while resting. Required caloric intakes vary from person to person, and depend, among other things, on age, sex, activity levels and muscle mass. Metabolic rate measurements are vital if patients wish to lose weight or make changes to their diets. The test (including consultation) takes around 45 minutes, and is performed by measuring the oxygen intake of patients in the morning (before they have eaten and while in a lying position). We also recommend that patients undergo a body composition test, and take advantage of nutritional and physical fitness counselling.

  • Measuring body fat with calipers

    Calipers are used to measure the thickness of subcutaneous fat tissue on various parts of the body, while the percentage of body fat is determined with the help of comparative tables designed for this purpose. This inexpensive test is useful for getting a rough estimate of the amount of body fat on specific parts of the body. It cannot, however, provide patients with their overall body fat percentage.

    Bioelectrical impedance analysis

    This method uses alternating electrical currents to get a better idea of the composition of a patient’s body. Its various resistance measurements make it possible to determine the total amount of fat, muscle and water in a patient’s body. This short and painless test is perfect for getting an overall idea of a patient’s health, as well as for follow-up analyses.

    Dexa scan

    Dexa scans, which are performed at the SPC’s Institute for Radiology, are the most accurate and reliable way to determine body composition. A quick and easy 7-minute x-ray scan is all that is required to determine the exact quantity of bones, fat and muscle mass in a patient’s body. We recommend this test for top athletes, as well as for overweight individuals who wish to use lifestyle changes (endurance sports, nutritional counselling, strength training, etc.) to obtain precise information on the success of their efforts.
